WENDELSTEIN

on a sunny October weekend 2001

The Wendelstein is one of the most popular mountains in the Bavarian Alps. Because of its exposed position (Map) and the height of 1838 m the view up there is breathtaking. It reaches from Grossglockner, Austrias highest mountain (3798 m) in the east to Zugspitze, Germanys top peak (2995 m) in the west.. Since 1912 a cogwheel-train offers its service to the ones who are too lazy or not able to hike up. The ride over bridges and through tunnels is supposed to be very impressing. We havn't done it yet.  Since 1970 a cablecar that starts in Bayerischzell is a second possibility to get to the Wendelsteinhaus. So you can be sure, if the weather is fine, its very busy. If you're a hiker you'll have a calm walk for two or three hours before you join the "hurly-burly" on the peak, where the young and the old ones meet to enjoy the gorgeous scenery.
